Row spacing defaults to plant spacing when left empty.
How the calculator works
The grid estimate uses floor calculations for plants per row and number of rows. If row spacing is left blank, it defaults to the same value as plant spacing.
The staggered option applies a modest uplift to reflect denser planting patterns and is labelled as approximate.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate plant spacing?
Divide the bed width by in-row spacing to estimate plants per row, and divide bed length by row spacing to estimate number of rows.
What is row spacing?
Row spacing is the distance between rows. It affects airflow, access for weeding, and the final plant count.
Can I plant closer in raised beds?
Raised beds can support tighter spacing in some crops, but avoid crowding that reduces airflow and increases disease pressure.
What is staggered planting?
Staggered planting offsets plants between rows. It can increase effective plant density compared with a strict square grid.
